At 15:00 on November 1, as the last truckload of stone was successfully dumped into the river, the Manang Marsyangdi Hydropower Project in Nepal, constructed by Sinohydro Bureau 7 Co., Ltd., successfully achieved river diversion and closure, marking the project's full transition into the main works construction phase and opening a new chapter in China-Nepal energy cooperation.
As a landmark project of Sichuan Province's participation in the Belt and Road Initiative and a priority project of China-Nepal power cooperation, the Manang Marsyangdi Hydropower Station has attracted much attention since its launch. Located in the Gandaki region of Nepal, the project is a Class III medium-sized diversion-type hydropower station with an installed capacity of 135 MW, a planned construction period of 42 months, and an expected annual power generation of 712 million kWh after commissioning. The works consist of the headworks, the water conveyance system, and the powerhouse complex.
During the preparation phase for the river diversion and closure works, the project team was hit by Tropical Cyclone Montha, which caused river levels to rise sharply and flows to increase substantially, creating extremely severe construction conditions. Facing these challenges, Sinohydro Bureau 7, as the EPC general contractor, promptly activated its emergency response plan, carried out scientific scheduling and efficient coordination, and repeatedly optimized the construction scheme, successfully overcoming numerous difficulties such as rapid currents and complex riverbed conditions to complete the key milestone on schedule.
