Recently, the Ministry of Transport issued the announcement of the "Catalogue for the Promotion of Energy-Saving and Low-Carbon Technologies in the Transport Industry (2024)", covering 27 advanced and applicable energy-saving and low-carbon technologies in the fields of highways, waterways and ports, road transport, and ship transport. The "CO2 Integrated Rapid Carbonation Solidification Technology for Soft Foundations", developed by the team of Professor Liu Songyu of the School of Transportation at Southeast University, Chairman of the Jiangsu Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering, was included on the list.
In response to the urgent need for carbon emission reduction in geotechnical engineering, the "CO2 Integrated Rapid Carbonation Solidification Technology for Soft Foundations" uses reactive MgO and related slag as solidifying materials. Through integral mixing with the soft foundation and then injecting an equivalent amount of CO2 gas, a rapid carbonation solidification reaction of 3-6 hours generates magnesium-based minerals that effectively cement and solidify the soft soil mass. This technology is suitable for in-situ solidification and reinforcement projects such as shallow soft foundations in highway engineering construction. It has so far been successfully applied to the carbonation treatment of 55,000 m3 of river-pond silt; testing shows a CO2 emission reduction of 17,050 t and energy savings of 506,800 tce.
The compilation and release of the "Catalogue for the Promotion of Energy-Saving and Low-Carbon Technologies in the Transport Industry" is an effective measure to guide the industry in scientifically selecting advanced energy-saving and low-carbon technologies. The Ministry of Transport compiled and released three batches of the Catalogue in 2016, 2019, and 2021 respectively, recommending 103 advanced energy-saving and low-carbon technologies for the industry, which have given full play to a leading and driving role and supported the green and low-carbon transformation of transport.
It is reported that Professor Liu Songyu's team has carried out research in the field of carbon emission reduction technology in geotechnical engineering for more than 10 years, and was the first at home and abroad to achieve CO2 carbon sequestration and utilization in the geotechnical engineering field. In 2021, the team published the first monograph, "Theory and Technology of Carbonation Solidification of Soft Soil", and obtained 7 international invention patents including those in the United States and 10 Chinese invention patents, forming a series of innovative technologies for integral carbon sequestration, carbon-sequestration piles, and carbon-sequestration lightweight soil, providing strong support for the green, low-carbon, and sustainable development of China's transport industry.
