On September 18, 2024, the Sill Gorge section of Contract H21 and the Sill Gorge-Pfons section of Contract H41 of the Brenner Base Tunnel achieved breakthrough. It is reported that Contract H21 connects the northern end of the Brenner Base Tunnel with Innsbruck Central Station; meanwhile, reports indicate that TBMs Wilma and Olga will be put into operation in Contract H53 of the Brenner Base Tunnel next week.
Upon completion, the 64 km Brenner Base Tunnel will become the world's longest railway tunnel. Crossing the Alps and connecting Italy and Austria, it will shorten the travel time from Fortezza to Innsbruck from 80 minutes to 25 minutes, and once completed, it will become an important link in the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Corridor of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).
