On April 3, 2024, preparations for the pumped-storage conversion of Germany's Forbach run-of-river power plant are set to begin construction. The new pumped-storage tunnel will connect the two reservoirs, allowing water to be released for power generation during peak electricity demand and pumped back to the upper reservoir for storage when there is surplus energy in the system, ready to generate power again.

The Forbach run-of-river power plant was completed in 1914. The project's tunnel will be constructed using the drill-and-blast method.
