On the morning of October 16, as the dust settled at the upper bench tunnel face and light broke through, it marked the successful breakthrough of the tunnel in the Phase II project of Chongqing Xintian Port. The tunnel is a key controlling works along the entire project line and serves as a rapid passage connecting the project's frontline wharf with the rear storage yard. The construction of the Chongqing Xintian Port project represents another important achievement by China Railway Guangzhou Engineering Group in building the golden waterway of the Yangtze River Basin.

The tunnel of the Chongqing Xintian Port Phase II project has a total length of 903 meters, with 895 meters of mined tunnel section and 4-meter-long open-cut sections at each of the inlet and outlet. The inlet end is near a concentrated residential area, while the outlet end is close to important local environmental and energy facilities such as a sewage treatment plant and a power supply plant. The surrounding rock is mainly highly weathered, fractured soft rock, classified as Grade V surrounding rock with poor stability; local fault-fractured zones present risks of collapse and rockfall, making overall construction difficult and safety risk control demanding.

The project department strictly implemented the Yangtze River Basin water and environmental protection requirements, adopting measures such as installing interception and drainage systems, dust-reduction and environmental protection systems, comprehensive grass planting and greening, and shotcrete-anchor vegetation concrete slope protection and greening. To ensure safe construction and improve quality control, the project department, based on advanced geological forecasting and monitoring measurement data, organized multiple expert demonstrations to optimize and adjust the construction plan; continuously optimized and improved technologies such as shotcrete and waterproofing layers; and organized multiple special night-school training sessions on key work including advanced geological forecasting, surveying technology, waterproofing construction, and safety control, providing solid theoretical basis and technical support for the smooth breakthrough of the tunnel.

The project department vigorously promoted smart construction site development, establishing a full-tunnel intelligent monitoring system to achieve intelligent, visualized, and dynamic control of key areas at the tunnel face and high-risk points in critical processes. During construction, the project department refined production plans, reasonably prepared resource allocations of personnel, machinery, and materials, implemented 24-hour shift operations, and assigned dedicated personnel for on-site supervision of key processes, greatly enhancing the project's comprehensive management level in safety, quality, progress, environmental protection, and materials and equipment.

Chongqing Xintian Port is one of the core port areas of Chongqing Port designated by the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee and Government. Located in Xintian Town, Wanzhou District, it is a large-scale, modern port with the best collection and distribution conditions, the most complete rail-road-water intermodal transport, and the widest radiation range in the middle and upper reaches of the Yangtze River and the Three Gorges Reservoir area. It is an important distribution center in Southwest China and can deeply radiate to Sichuan, Shaanxi, Hubei, and other regions. Once completed, Xintian Port will become a golden sea outlet for the eastern departure of Sichuan and Chongqing and the southward movement of Gansu and Shaanxi, with the lowest logistics transport costs and the highest transport efficiency, strongly boosting the construction of the Yangtze River Economic Belt and the upper Yangtze River shipping center.
