Recently, construction began on the Wenchaojian River project in Beijing. The project is one of the major water conservancy projects prioritized by the Ministry of Water Resources in 2023, and is also a key flood-control backbone project in the North Canal basin.
The Wenchaojian River project is located at the junction of Tongzhou District and Shunyi District. The project starts west of Gequ Village on the left bank of the Wenyu River and enters the Chaobai River north of Gangbei Village, with a total length of about 13 kilometers. The main construction contents include newly excavated river channels, and supporting facilities such as sluice gates, embankment filling, cross-river bridges, riverside patrol roads, bank slope greening, and electrical automation systems.
Upon completion, the project can divert Wenyu River floodwater to the Chaobai River in advance during the flood season, alleviating the flood diversion pressure on the downstream North Canal. Combined with the basin's flood storage and detention areas, it will safeguard flood control in the relevant areas. At the same time, it can supplement ecological water for the Xiaozhong River, Chaobai River, and other waterways, playing an important role in improving urban water ecology, enhancing the living environment of surrounding areas, and promoting high-quality economic and social development along the river.
